Catherine Masters - Multidisciplinary Parent

Teaching my kids to paint since 2  0  1  8

Thank you for visiting and supporting The Masters Family Art Project. As an artist and mother and mother to artists, I am forever aware and grateful for the community of art lovers, supporters and friends.

So, who am I and what makes me capable of guiding the real artists of this project (my kids)?

My name is Catherine. I am the mother of three beautifully wild hearts. I am a working illustrator and portrait artist. And, I am re-learning to paint by giving my kids a fine arts education.

Yes, I did go to art school, a few times actually.  After graduation, I spent several years working as an art consultant and marketing associate for fine arts institutions across the United States, but always made time to pursue my own work as a freelance artist. In 2010, I left the gallery scene to illustrate what would become a New York Times best selling dating-advice book (written by a celebrity no less!).

From there, my creative resume got to be pretty diverse. After illustrating the book, I spent time creating art and content for various celebrity websites. I met the right people at the right times, and somehow launched a successful career in makeup artistry, spanning many platforms across the United States, United Kingdom and Japan. I worked on multiple seasons of America's Next Top Model and had features in US Vogue, Glamour Magazine, US Weekly and People Magazine before moving into the role of educator. That gig took me up and down the West Coast, throughout the Southwestern states, Miami and Chicago. It was a lot of fun.

In 2014 I became a mother and Southerner, giving me the push to stay planted and work from home. I spent two years quietly trying to find my voice as an artist again. But, I had a second baby before I could find it.

We moved several times before settling in Middle Tennessee, and I explored many ideas before having my third child. I began working (and still do) for A Family Print Shop, creating custom portraits and silhouettes. It's an ideal work-from-home "day job," allowing for plenty of time to homeschool and art school with my kids.

As an ever-stretched-too-thin mother of three young children, it became apparent how necessary the quiet, meditative process of creating art is to my daily sanity. Moreover, I've found how fundamentally important it is to my kids. They are my inspiration, and I am their greatest champion. Thusly, The Masters Family Art Project was born--from the need to express our stress and curiosities in the most therapeutic form I know: paint.

We paint together every day (time and children allowing). We learn from each other, we advise each other (yes, my 5 year old is quite the critic), and we better ourselves in the process. The project has amassed quite a collection, with the occasional studio sale and prints always available through the website. Thank you for supporting our collective passion, and thank you for investing in young artists.
